Sun Devils, Huskies try to snap streaks
By Associated Press
SEATTLE (AP) - This situation is odd and unfamiliar to Dennis Erickson.
His Arizona State squad brings a school record-tying six-game losing streak into Saturday's game at winless Washington. The skid is the longest losing streak of Erickson's career at any of his college stops, which include Idaho, Wyoming, Washington State, Miami, Oregon State and now the Sun Devils, a team that was expected to challenge for a Pac-10 title this season. "It's Sept. 6, the last time we won a game. That's a long time. I don't remember that ever," Erickson said. "Our attention is on trying to win a game and break that streak." Arizona State's losses have come to UNLV, then-No. 3 Georgia, California, then-No. 8 USC, Oregon and Oregon State. The losing streak ties the school record set in 1929. By kickoff on Saturday in Seattle, Arizona State will have gone 61 days without a victory. "At the collegiate level, he's never been through anything like this," said Washington offensive coordinator Tim Lappano, one of Erickson's closest friends. "I know it's weighing on him." Last week was Arizona State's most competitive efforts in weeks, yet the Sun Devils were still on the short end of a 27-25 loss at Oregon State after botching at two-point conversion attempt with 21 seconds left. Still, it was a weekend of improvement, since Arizona State had failed to score more than 20 points since its 41-17 win over Stanford on Sept. 6. Arizona State still has a chance for bowl eligibility. After playing at Washington, the Sun Devils return home for Washington State and UCLA. A trio of wins would get the Sun Devils to 5-6 entering the season finale at rival Arizona. "I hope guys aren't overconfident. They don't have a reason to be overconfident if they are. Our team has lost has six straight games," Arizona State quarterback Rudy Carpenter said. "Hopefully guys will prepare themselves this week like they would any other week, just keep fighting and trying to get back in the win column." To Washington, a six-game losing streak seems like nothing. The Huskies haven't won in nearly a year, dropping 10 straight since beating California 37-23 on Nov. 17, 2007. Last week just added to the misery, a 58-0 drubbing by No. 7 USC just a few days after it was announced that coach Tyrone Willingham would be out at the end of the season. It was a lifeless effort against the Trojans and again raised thoughts that the4 Husky players have given up on the season. "I don't know about lately. Maybe it's just me and maybe I'm just foolish, but I go into games thinking, 'Man, maybe something is going happen, the ball is going to go our way this game or something like that,"' Washington center Juan Garcia said. "There are a majority of guys that feel that way." The schedule would appear to finally be letting up for Washington, giving the Huskies at least an opportunity to avoid the first winless season in school history and the first 0-12 campaign in Pac-10 history. After having yet to play a team with a losing record, the Huskies host the Sun Devils, UCLA (3-5) and play at Washington State (1-8) in the next three weeks. "We've just got to put it all together on Saturday and get to that next level of winning a game," quarterback Ronnie Fouch said. |
