YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) - Retired Seattle Mariners All-Star Edgar Martinez conducted a two-hour baseball clinic for 200 children in Yakima, but his real message was about the importance of education.
Martinez told his audience Tuesday that baseball is fun and a great game to play on weekends, but education will help young people become doctors and lawyers.
He participated in a daylong series of events to highlight early childhood education.
He also made appearances on behalf of the Central Washington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and to help raise money for the Buena library.
In 2008, Martinez and his wife Holli launched The Martinez Foundation, which aims to strengthen communities by providing underserved populations with educational opportunities.
