Ferry riders should be prepared for more passengers, more cars and longer waits on every run. Commuters who normally come up from Tacoma are calling the ferries saying they'll cross to Vashon, drive up the island, and take a boat into West Seattle or downtown.

In response, the state is adding two passenger-only sailings. Below is their news release:

The Washington State Ferries will make vessel and schedule changes in response to construction scheduled to shut down portions of Interstate 5 in Seattle.

On the Seattle-Bremerton route, the 188-car Walla Walla will be replaced by the 144-car Kaleetan beginning Sunday. The Kaleetan can carry 500 more passengers than the Walla Walla.

The 6:20 a.m. ferry from Bremerton will have more passenger space available. WSF is encouraging riders who normally drive to park their vehicles and walk-on to the ferries to prevent long waits and congestion during the construction period, scheduled to continue through Aug. 29.

Those interested in setting up temporary car pools can contact Nicole Patrick at patricn@wsdot.wa.gov or at (206) 515-3857.

On the Seattle-Vashon route, passenger-only sailings will be added to the passenger-only schedule beginning Monday and lasting through the I-5 closures. There will be a 5:50 a.m. sailing from Vashon to Seattle and a 6:25 a.m. sailing from Seattle to Vashon. In the afternoons, the ferry system is adding a 3:35 p.m. sailing from Seattle to Vashon and a 4:10 p.m. sailing from Vashon to Seattle.
