Which are the HOV lanes when using the express lanes?

This can get very confusing at times. I asked the DOT what drivers should look for when they are in that area to separate the HOV lanes.

Here’s what they said, “When the I-5 express lanes are operating in the northbound direction, the HOV lane begins as the left hand exit lane to Lake City Way. The HOV lane then runs until the express lanes meet up with the mainline of I-5 near downtown Seattle.

Because the express lanes are reversible and this lane is not HOV in the southbound direction, we do not have diamonds marked on the pavement or the lane delineated with the wide sold line. We do, however, have it signed as HOV “
