After the Nisqually earthquake in 2001, the WSDOT did put in place some roadway restrictions on the Viaduct. According to the WSDOT, “Vehicles with a gross weight of more than 105,500 lbs. are prohibited. Each single axle is not to exceed 20,000 lbs., and tandem axles are not to exceed 34,000 lbs. Trucks and buses must travel in the right-hand lane only. Further restrictions could be imposed in the future.”

Inspections continue every 6 months to check for further settling until the replacement tunnel is built. The first phase of the construction is set for spring of 2010. The new tunnel is set to open to the public in 2015.
