I am going on a trip through several states. I have 4 wheel drive, so do I need chains?By Rachelle MurciaIn Washington, 4 wheel drive vehicles do not have to chain up even if chains are required. However, there are incidents when conditions get so bad, the State Patrol will stop cars or SUV's even with 4 wheel drive and require them to chain up as well. Those cases are rare, however, that is why the WSP suggests drivers always carry a set of chains with them. I have found this rule to be true in other states as well. They aren't required, per say, but if things get bad, there could be an exception to the rule, and you could be asked to chain up. Most Popular
