Let Me In!

Washington State Patrol says no one has to let you in when you're merging. That means you could be sitting at the end of a ramp waiting forever.

It's a law that, Clairbel Novelo, says is a little frustrating.

"I think that people on the freeway should be considerate of people that are merging," explains the 19 year old driver.

Troopers want drivers to know that being considerate and being right are two different things when it comes to the rules of the road.

"No person shall move upon a roadway unless and until such movement can be made with reasonable safety," the statute reads.

A big reason for the law is to help prevent accidents that are caused by drivers jumping into the lane and cutting people off.

"If somebody cuts a car off and it causes a collision several cars back, they can ultimately be responsible for the cause of that collision," explains Trooper Keith Leary.

To avoid a dangerous situation, Leary suggests taking the first opening you see.

"It may not be the quickest decision but it's the safest," says Leary.
