How Hot Has It Been?

SEATTLE - It's been quite a scorcher or late, as our natural air conditioning has taken an extended leave of absence. Although none of the days have broken any daily heat records, we have been over 85 degrees for five straight days.

Pouring back over the Seattle records, the last time that happened was July 23-27 in 1996. Seattle only averages 10 days at 85 or better each year, so we've used up half our average quota already.

Why? We just haven't been able to bring in our usual marine air. A 2-3 day heat wave is common, but after a 2-3 days, the winds will shift back to the west and the cool marine air will move in. This time, we haven't had our usual high pressure offshore to push in those marine breezes.

That's expected to change this week as our marine air slowly returns.
