Oh, that wascally Convergence Zone!

Oh, that wascally Convergence Zone!

For some of you on Tuesday, it was a very wet morning and then a relatively dry evening and night.

For others, the rain was relentless, drifting well into the overnight hours and into early Wednesday morning.

Blame our old friend the Puget Sound Convergence Zone which set up shop in the afternoon and then decided to stay the night -- dropping as much as 2" of rain in some spots around the greater Everett area.

Take a look at this map of rainfall totals by those reporting to the CoCoRahs community weather network (They still love volunteers! Sign up here!.)

And compare it to the radar image above. The 2.21" and 2.19" were recorded in Everett. Meanwhile Cinebar had 2.03" and Sultan 1.88". Now look farther south into King County -- mainly 0.5-0.75" and the bulk of that fell with the main front in the morning.

Just goes to show the variability in weather around here. Also of note -- the PSCZ does a good job of counterbalancing the annual rainfall lost in Snohomish County due to the Olympic Rain Shadow. When the upper level winds are out of the west/southwest as they are with most storms, the Everett area actually typically gets less rain than Seattle by just being on the fringe of the shadow. (As most locals know, the main bullseye of the shadow is around Sequim/Port Townsend.)

But then there are days like Tuesday when the wind veers to the northwest -- typically after a storm's passage -- that Everett and environs get extra rain to make up for it :)
