It wasn't just wet, but record wet this past weekend

Has it seemed a little soggy of late? That might be an understatement.

From Thursday through Sunday, Seattle has received an amazing 3.37" of rain. That is roughly double the average September rainfall for the entire month!

But there's more...

1.49" fell on Friday, making it the 4th wettest September day on record, according to Dana Felton with the National Weather Service in Seattle.  And even more impressive, 0.63" fell between 11 p.m. Friday and midnight Saturday morning, breaking the one-hour rainfall record for September, Felton said. The two hour record also fell as 0.94" fell in that period of time.

That is more reminiscent of Midwest thunderstorms than the gentle rains of Seattle. To put that in perspective -- we received 0.95" of rain in all of July and August combined!

So far for the entire month, Seattle was at 4.10" -- in the top 5 for wettest Septembers on record. The wettest September is 5.95" set in 1978.

Here are the top 5 wettest Septembers:

1) 5.95" 1978
2) 5.57" 1969
3) 4.60" 1959
4) 4.10" 1972
4) 4.10" 2010 (through Sunday)

For Olympia, their records are even more impressive. The 1.65" they received on Friday was their wettest September day on record, Felton said.

UW Research Meteorologist Mark Albright notes that through Saturday, Olympia had 4.1" of rain in the past four days, and 5.30" in the past 31 days. That city averages 2.0" inches for September.

Here are some other 4-day totals, courtesy of the volunteer CoCoRahs reporting network:

Auburn 1.27"
Sammamish 1.60"
Renton 1.58"
Bellevue 2.66"
Issaquah 1.28"
Redmond 1.96"
Kirkland 2.37"
Shoreline 1.67"
Woodinville 2.02"
Mercer Island 2.32
Federal Way: 2.09"
Bothell: 1.76"
Everett: 1.45"
Marysville: 1.74"
Snohomish: 1.70" -- Thursday through Saturday
Gig Harbor: 3.55"
Puyallup: 1.12"
Tacoma: 3.21"

There is still some rain in the forecast in the coming days so it's possible this could get into one of the three wettest Septembers ever.

UPDATE!!

I originally posted this blog Sunday night after talking with Felton to get some of the rain records, but since then, he wrote up a big long public information statement early Monday morning that details even more rain records that have fallen these past few days. I've pasted it below -- some of it is redundant to what I have above, but it has some good new stuff and expands on Olympia records.
