Ever seen a "steam devil" before?

You've probably heard of dust devils, but have you ever heard of a "steam devil?" I hadn't until I checked Spaceweather.com today.

Here is a fantastic photo from photographer Mike Hollingshead in Iowa, captured at sunrise on August 29.

The site says in late summer-early fall when waters are still warm but morning air is growing cold, little tornadoes of steam are often seen dancing across lake surfaces.

I don't know that I've ever heard of these around here -- I'm guessing it's because generally the water temperatures are colder and we don't get the intense summer heat to really warm up the smaller lakes and ponds.

Here is more information about the steam devil and the photographer at this link .
