Fourth of July: 4th warmest; but just 20th best?

Fourth of July: 4th warmest; but just 20th best?
By YouNews contributor Traci_01

For the second time in three years, it's been a toasty Fourth of July -- more known for cool and showery as it is the statistical wettest day of the month.

The high temperature on Saturday was 87 degrees, tied for fourth warmest on record. (91 in 1972 is the record, and we've had an 89 in 1975, an 88 in 1997 and another 87 in 1958.)

But did the 87 make it a touch too hot? David Obelcz, who is the author of our Summer Sanity Index went back and using similar criteria, rated how this Fourth stacked up against prior ones.

He weights items such as temperature, rainfall, and its day of the week to get a score for each day. For sun fans, a sunny, 87 degree day might nearly top the charts, but in this case, the score is penalized for being over 84 -- a nebulous threshold for when Seattleites start feeing it's getting too hot.  So factoring that in, 2009's version ranked 20th all time -- better than average still.

But the top two -- i.e. the most pleasant 4th's -- were from 1970 and 1981 where the high was 81 and 82 respectively with no rain. 2007's 84 degree high ranked fourth.

Here is his chart:
