The imposing image above is a high-resolution satellite image of Super Typhoon Jangmi, which rated as the strongest tropical storm by strength of the year 2008.

At its peak, it reached rare Category 5 strength -- the top of the Saffir-Simspon hurricane strength scale, but struck northern Taiwan as a Category 3. It was the only storm of 2008 to reach Category 5 strength.

NASA's Earth Observatory site has gone back and highlighted the strongest storm of each year this decade, and put together satellite images of the storm as well as links to the storms' page on Wikipedia.
