Ribbon of colors over California

Elliot Green captured this great photo Thursday of a rainbow cloud over Costa Mesa, California.

This photo is similar physics to the rainbow halos around the sun we saw over the weekend.

They are caused by tiny ice crystals in those really high, cold clouds that act like tiny prisms. And if they are positioned at just the correct angle from the sun, you get the gorgeous rainbow effect.
