Seattle now home to even less than 78 minutes of summer

One year ago today, as Seattle was in the middle of a summer without much warmth, I published a blog counting the minutes Seattle had over 80 degrees as a way to quantify just how cool it had been, especially compared to the rest of the nation, which had come to learn the term "heat dome" and what days of 100+ degree weather was like.
The answer was 78 minutes, and it became a mantra of the summer.
I kept up with the count again this year due to popular demand, figuring for sure we'd easily surpass that mark by now. I mean, how can you really go less than about an hour of summer?
Guess what, Seattle. We did.
The number of minutes Seattle has been over 80 so far this year is 50 minutes.
That's according to the thermometer at the University of Washington Atmospheric Sciences Department which, unlike Sea-Tac Airport, keeps an actual minute-by-minute log of the weather station atop their roof on the Seattle campus.
And since the UW is in the heart of Seattle, while Sea-Tac Airport is more like the lower-left shin, I figure this could be an accurate representation of what a true Seattle person would have felt this summer. I chose 80 since that's what I figured most Seattleites would consider a truly warm, summer day.
We have hit that 80 mark just three times at UW, tallying 18 minutes on July 8, eight more minutes on July 11, and 24 on July 12. UW has yet to reach 81. (Sea-Tac has reached 83, but even at 83, this is the fourth-latest we've gone into a summer -- soon to be third latest -- at Sea-Tac without being warmer than 83 by this point.)
The tally wasn't meant as a complaint about our summers -- indeed, Seattle is unique in that there is a sizable percentage of the population who would be just fine if the tally always remained less than an episode of Grey's Anatomy. (There are cities this year that have gone nights where it didn't get under 80.) It was just a way to take our experiences of frequent clouds and infrequent trips to the beach and put it into something tangible. And I was quite surprised the number was less this year than last year.
But you know what? I'd think most Seattleites would feel that while this summer won't get any sunshine trophies, it hasn't been quite as "un-summer-like" as last year, although the statistics are somewhat similar between the two years:
| From June 1 to July 17 | 2011 | 2012 | ||
| June | July | June | July | |
| No. of Sunny/Partly Cloudy/Cloudy days | 1/20/9 | 4/3/10 | 0/15/15 | 5/8/4 |
| No. of days with measurable rain | 11 | 7 | 14 | 5 |
| Days with highs warmer than 75° | 2 | 7 | 2 | 10 |
| Days with highs warmer than 80° | 0 | 3 | 0 | 3 |
| Average high temperature | 67.6° | 73.5° | 65.7° | 74.2° |
| Total Rainfall | 1.42" | 0.58" | 2.96" | 0.40" |
(Note these stats are for Sea-Tac Airport which reports more parameters for their climate data than UW)
Maybe it's the fact that we've had a few more days over 75 this July (10 vs 7)? Both July 1-17 periods had three days in the 80s, but this year has had five days between 77-79 (so close!) while 2011 just had one.
So, say, had I picked 77 instead of 80 as the measuring stick, 2012 would have a decent lead over 2011. Another telling statistic is that July 2011 had 10 overcast days while 2012 has had only 4 so far - meaning we've had more sunshine this year. It's also been quite muggy with the spate of thunderstorms this week, making it even feel warmer than the thermometer showed.
All this despite the fact that 2012's June was cooler and wetter than 2011's.
Or maybe it was our unprecedented streak of sunny weekends in March and April? It was a bit warmer this spring at times than last spring, so maybe we didn't have as much cumulative angst this year.
Or am I wrong? Does this summer feel even less summer-like than last year?
An informal poll on my Facebook page found that 58 percent of people think this summer is about the same, with 25 percent thinking it's better and the rest, even worse than 2011.
What do you think? Have we had more "summer" this year despite what the numbers say? Answer in the comment field below.
And I'll keep tracking each day's tally on Twitter @SummerMinutes. Last year, we did get some warmer weather later in the season, especially September, that brought the final total to a respectable 3,323 minutes. We'll see if 2012 can come from behind.

I just moved from Texas where the more than 40 days of more than 100 degrees of heat (and most of that time we never went below 80 degrees at night, not to mention the stifling humidity). I mean come on, people, this place is paradise compared to that kind of oppressive heat. I am sure I will miss the sunshine come fall, but for now, I am loving it!
Sunny and 70s = Summer for me!
Great observations, Scott! I appreciate the "Big Picture".
This summer has seemed more sunny than last summer to me, up to this point. Would be neat to see stats like this for the actual summer season, from late June to late September.
This is kind of a neat study, but I'm tired of people complaining about the weather. If you don't like Seattle-area weather, then move. We don't want you complainers here anyways...
Temps are quite tolerable--more rain would be good, though, with some thunderstorms. Thanks, Scott.
Forgive me for sounding negative but June 1 to July 17 is not an entire summer in Washington or most other states. If you want to have something really worthwhile to write about, do the tracking from June1 to August 31. Then make your declarations. Otherwise your statistics have no value in determining what summers are like in Seattle. I'm surprised it even got written up as newsworthy.

Precursing the 2009 Seattle winter I was granted one wish, so I chose to keep the weather fine for my local tent cities... and wouldn't you know it? Seattle still has had the best weather since then compared to ... THEM =\
I love the weather here. I really couldn't, or wouldn't want to live where it is hot for months out of the year. Rarely too hot or too cold. To me, perfect!!
I'm loving our weather and wouldn't change anything.
Global warming my eye!!!!!
Ahhh... I love summers in Seattle, Nothin to complain about here!
This is a non-story. Any summer day with sunshine and 70 is a good summer day. And I do count September as part of summer as long as it's sunny.
So there.
@Gigantor! Yeah, how is this news? It has to be 80 degrees? That's a pretty narrow definition of summer.
Â
Sent this to relative in Richland/Kennewick. Â He responded they have probably had a 1000 minutes this summer over 100 degrees....
I'll wait until the end of August before I decide we didn't get a decent summer. The stats there show that there hasn't been much difference between this summer and last summer thus far. Don't we go through this every year?
It seems an awful lot like last summer to me. This past Sunday was downright cold, and the only reason I didn't turn on the heat was I just did not want to admit that I was so cold on a 58 degree day in the middle of July, that I had to fire up the old heater.
Where's the sun?
I miss the 75-80 degree weather. I am now roasting in Salt Lake City instead where last week we were finishing up a stretch of 7 days over 100 degrees. Be grateful for nature's AC because most of the nation would kill for it!
As much as I enjoyed the 100 degree temperatures in the midwest, coming back here to a nice 75 degrees (though my outside temperature in Kent now has reached 80) is a blessing compared to two weeks of 100 degree temperatures!
Well I finally did the move to sunshine and warmth. no regrets. no it's not California. I am adjusting to the sun and friendly  people believe me Seattle is not the center of the universe. Glad i made the right choice. Good bye gloomy and crappy weather
 @Former Western WA Good bye
Another slow day at Komo.. recall this is the maritime northwest? If you want hot and sunny move elsewhere. Next!
The oppressive cloud cover and cool mornings - no coffee in the yard - are making this summer much worse for me. Â As the rest of the country suffers, we seem to be in "global cooling" so perhaps our property values will creep up. Â We'll need Emmett Watson back to keep people from moving here to escape the heat.
Seems a little warmer to me. I'd rather be here than anywhere else in the US.
I think this summer has been JUST FINE. Â I'll take 70s or even 60s as opposed to heat and humidity. Â One complaint -- too much rain and grass is still growing like crazy. Â But that's a minor complaint. Â
I've enjoyed this summer much more than last summer so far, even if it hasn't been over 80 for as long as it was at this time last year. Â It's been consistently warmer this summer, especially since the start of July or at least it feels like it has. Â It also seems like, when it has been in the 70's this year, it has been very humid on top of it quite often. Â That might be another reason why this summer has felt warmer. Â Anyway, at this time last year, I was still wearing my parka to work regularly. Â This year, I haven't had to. Â Hopefully we can keep this going through September, even if we don't necessarily hit the 80 degree mark very often.
Plenty of people around here have experienced "real" summers like the ones in the Midwest and Northeast (including myself.) I'm a PNW native, but have lived in other parts of the country before coming back here. I HATE heat and humidity, so 70s, sunshine, low humidity are perfect summer conditions IMHO. The only weather improvement would be California, where there is more sun but still relatively cool temps. I'll be moving back there when the kids graduate from high school!
I have liked this summer better than last so far, mostly, as the writer notes, because of fewer cloudy days. The grey really gets me down. Do want to share that this is the weather I grew up with in the 50's-60's, and the major reason why I left for sunnier climes just as soon as I could. Returned after 7 years to find that the weather had changed here somewhat and Seattle had higher temps and more sunny days. That was in 1975. In the last 10 years or so I think we've gone right back to my childhood. I read something about the Pacific decadal oscillation that seems to explain it. Thinking about sunnier places once again.Â
I'm glad at least for the past couple of weeks we have had a lot of sun. The t-storms are a nice touch too. I'm glad we don't scorch like the rest of the country, but would it be so hard to have a few days of 80-85? That would be like ... perfect!
I don't mincd if it does not go above 80 degrees, as I have no AC at home. Sunny weather with temps in the low to mid 70's with crystal clear skys is perfect. Seattle summers, with long sunny and mild days arew the best in the country!
@Mikefly562 Three years ago, we had the portable A/C out in mid-May (that really hot summer)...last year we didn't have it out until the last week of June and only used it two weeks of last summer (not all at once)...it's past mid-July and we haven't had to set it up yet! We can stand a couple muggy days because thankfully they haven't lasted long, so YAY! I hear ya!
Hey, we got a good few days so far, so I am saying we actually got some summer with more on the way. Better than last year so far!
Seattle is a joke of a city!
Hot summer days: summer hot, most are not.Â
I agree, this is hardly a summer. But the natives here that say how much they like dull gray skies and drizzle have never known a summer to begin with! "Another low pressure system is headed our way" should be our new state motto.
I love the 70s. My sister sweltered in 100+ degrees daily in Baltimore a few weeks ago- several days of it without power. They lived in their basement and washed with the garden hose. Can't say I'm sorry to have missed that!
I gotta say the short summer combined with the loooooong winter drove me to where I am at now.
Â
75 degrees and sunny 200 plus days of the year works well for my lifestyle.
Â
But I will throw out the proverbial consolation for Seattle "it's very beautiful up there with all the green and mountains" as provided by the rain.
I much prefer this than the 100 degrees plus in the rest of the country!
I think the the summer -- as of the solstice -- has felt better/warmer than last summer. Â I noticed every bit of the extra rain in June this year especially and coolness (compared to normal) in June both years. Â I felt both of our last two Springs -- and beyond -- in fact I think Spring for the last 5 years, except for the big change the last half of 2009 Spring -- have felt progressively cooler, and all below average. Â My vegetable garden would agree -- it had a chance to go crazy in 2009 after the rain stopped in May -- But the last few years? Â Especially the last 2? Â Not so great......
This is fine, comfortable weather and I like it. We'll get our small share of over 85 later in Jul/Aug. We also don't have to deal with over 100 except on a rare occasion which is also ok by me.
All I know is that my tomato plants are doing much better this year than last. Mother nature must be doing something right!
This summer is more horrible than last summer because I had hopes that mother nature would redeem itself and send us a few days in the 90s. The only summer I've seen here is July 2009. Other than that nothing even comes close to satisfying my love for summer weather besides a plane ticket.
The 70s are perfect! I know I'm a hypocrite to complain about complaining, BUT my pet peeve is all of the complaining and the Eeyor- tone of voice from certain "meteorologists" (not you), for example, something like "Enjoy today, because tomorrow, well, it doesn't look good, a big change is coming, so sorry about that......" Maybe I want rain for my garden, or to fill my rain barrel, don't tell me your opinion of the weather, just report the weather, I'll decide if I'm happy about it or not! Â Whew! Thank you for letting me vent, and I will continue to enjoy this lovely time of year, Â what ever the weather is.
I'm glad for the weather we have - grew up mostly in Valley of the Sun in Arizona and lived in Ohio near Cincinnati as a youngster and remember fainting from the heat and humidity there - don't think I could put up with all that heat they've having back in that area anymore.
Nothing wrong with a few 80+ F days to me, and this from a Puget Sound lifer. Conversely I don't mind that we measure "our" summers differently than the rest of the country. Hearing from friends elsewhere I certainly am thankful for the cool that we've been having. Yes the mornings could be brighter without the overcast, but I'll take it over triple digits anytime, any day.
This is spring not summer.
A few 80* days is nice overall the summer is just fine in my opinion we could use a day or two of rain just to clean the air up... allergies get worse and air quality goes down the longer we go without it. I jus tprefer it rain on days I work so when I am off work I can enjoy the sunshine when we have it =)
Everyone complaints about the weather but no one does a thing about it.
@KOMO_Sapiens What would you suggest that people do about the weather?
Â
At any rate, not everyone complains about the weather. Some of us actually enjoy the cool summers!
