Winter's over for Seattle....or is it?

Winter is officially just barely more than half over, but its obituaries are coming fast and furious -- mainly courtesy of an Associated Press article earlier this week that posed the question: "Could Seattle see a winter without snow?"
Sure, it's been a very boring winter by all accounts -- so far our 2012-13 winter trophies consist of a 12-day "Fog Storm" and 27 days of December rain. As for snow? Just 0.6" at Sea-Tac Airport on Dec. 17 and a trace on three other dates. Even taking snow out the equation, the other two big winter events, heavy rains and strong winds, have mainly been MIA as well.
What we've been left with are a lot of mundane cloudy days with some light rain at times. February has had measurable rain on eight of 12 days but seven of those days were less than a tenth of an inch with 0.14" being the wettest day so far. January had a wet two-day period on the 8th-9th (2.15" combined) and then the other 15 rainy days of the month -- save the 28th -- had less than a quarter inch of rain.
The good news is the drippy rain showers down here have been enough to at least keep our mountain snowpack pretty close to normal, but for a neutral year, I think a lot of snow fans were hoping a day or two to ski Queen Anne Hill.
But to those who have given up, I have a chart that shows a lot of blue that just might cure the missing-winter blues.
And no, we're not talking blue skies either.
This is the general forecast for 8-14 days out. Note the West Coast is expected to dip into quite the chilly pattern:

Now, this doesn't mean Seattle's about to spend a week in the 20s with 6" snow drifts, it just means the odds are pretty high that we're going to be colder than normal in that period.
Indeed, the long range computer models have been toying with punching some colder air into the region from the Gulf of Alaska in the week after next. There is much variability in the specific forecasts as you would expect with a forecast that far out, and so far no scenarios have painted a big arctic outbreak nor winter storm (Those who are hoping we'll get "Winter Storm Orko" or "Winter Storm Q" from the Weather Channel might have to wait till next year).
But at least it's...something. And not just more "scattered light showers with highs in the upper 40s and a low of 38". And contrary to what seems like prevailing themes that we're supposed to be in the low 60s by late February or something, it has snowed in Seattle even into early March in our past.
So don't take this as an "it's going to snow in two weeks" forecast yet -- way too early for that sort of proclamation. But for snow fans, it's just a pep talk to not give up on winter just yet.
By the way, Seattle does average an essentially snow-less winter about twice a decade. The last time was just a few years' back in the 2009-10 winter. Most of those blank years were El Nino, not neutral years, so hang in there!
anyone who is routing for snow has never had to shovel their car from under 6 feet of snow, only to find your street isnt going to be plowed for 2 weeks. i can drive to hurricane ridge, mt baker, and mt rainier to see more snow than ive ever seen before in my life and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Winter is done, bring on spring. yea!!!
It's not over yet. We've had some "good" snowy days in February and as late as March/April.Â
Seattle's a bunch of wimps. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!
I'm thrilled with this winter. I see no reason to want snow outside of the mountains. It is bad for the homeless, and it's bad for my commute to work. If I want snow, the mountains are only an hour or two away.
This news gives me a firm happiness bone.
The only snow I saw this winter was up in BC, Canada and I don't mind that. I come from central Canada anyway, so any small amount of snow is a-okay in my books. I am not fond of ankle, shin or even knee deep snow and if I truly miss that I can take a drive to Mt. Rainier for the day. The weather has been perfect and if people don't like this weather, why the heck did you move here or stay here for that matter?
You guys are going to have this weather until July! Haha!
@DaveP yup, 40 - 50 degrees, cloudy, rainy or damp but should clear up around 1 week in July
Like the song goes, that's the way I like it uh huh...
@DavePÂ Dang you should have a sitcom! Â That blew my mind!
@DavePÂ I don't mind so jokes on you, HA HA!
I would like 1-2" and thats it! Remember when it would snow (i grew up in tacoma) and we'd get about 2" and by the end of the afternoon it would be gone except for some shady spots? I want that to happen. Enough to make for a pretty morning and be gone by dinner. No driving concerns or ice. Just some happy snow flakes!
No more snow below 5000 feet would be awesome! Above that they can get another 30 feet!
@SEC Rules let's not be greedy, let it snow at 2000 ft and above
So its the norm grey skies and rain till early July..
@Windowseat yup pretty much same ole same ole
@Windowseat Sounds good to me.
For those that haven't lived here very long (and them with really short memories) it has snowed in the area as late as the 3rd week of April.
No one has been able to predict the weather accurately 3 days in advance (barring extreme weather patterns) in the 55 years I've lived here.
@bobalouie I remember the April snow. My kid was in soccer and it was so child. The while field was slush and the kids were frozen!
6" snow drifts I can handle. 6' is another story.
@wali it's it's snowing I'm not going...Â
@wali Do tell this story!
I wish it would snow, even if it's just an inch or two.
@BluefireJaguar there's plenty of snow up in them there hills :)
@BluefireJaguar It did. My buddy in Boston is still digging out.  ;-)
Hope we get a really nice summer this year. Been 3 years since we've had one.
@Jatok Um I think you forgot about how nice last summer was...best I've seen in years.
@BluefireJaguar @Jatok  summer last year (for me) sucked I spent all of July, August and September, replacing roof trusses, decking and shingles.
Not fun but saved about 15K doing it myself...
What I remember was that almost every thing in my yard drowned from to much rain. I think maybe our idea of a nice summer might just be different.Â
Yes, I was in Seattle last summer. I'm not so sure why it should make any difference to you or anyone else that I am hoping for a nice summer. Doesn't take anything away from anyone does it?!
@Jatok were you in Seattle this summer? there were 75 days of no rain and it was more or less 75 and sunny for 3.5 months straight. im not one of those people who takes offense to seattle weather whining, but come one give me a break.
@BluefireJaguar i agree. if every summer was like last summer i'd never threaten to leave the puget sound area.... some of those 90-100 degree summer days we've had in previous summers about did me in!
@Riley198Â @BluefireJaguarÂ
I just don't understand what everyone is complaining about, Seattle summers being too hot, as I turn on the a/c in the house, the car etc...
@BluefireJaguar We had the long dry stretch in September after the kids were back in school, but we didn't have our usual hot weather at the end of July.Â
I almost prefer something pretty inclement than these endless days of drab. But it's not like we have a choice in what Mother Nature hands us...Â
Dang...I have to put all my winter clothes away then !
I love snow and windstorms. But I really don't have time for winter weather this year. Maybe next winter, huh, Steve?
@Silvia It's actually Scott Sistek who wrote this article. Steve Pool just flaps his gums on TV.
Last year's storm wiped out trees in my front yard as well as 4 days without power. I'm in no hurry for winter weather.
I'm enjoying this non-Winter weather! Â In no hurry for snow or ice or wind. Â Nice to be able to get outside. Â That 27 days of rain in December was brutal!Â
@DT Rain happens around here.
Thanks for the editing ability, KOMO!
@DTÂ Brutal? If it's so bad, why do you live here?Â
@Smashquail @DT That was sarcasm.
Sounds like we are grasping at straws for a winter that hasn't delivered on any level. Â I'm not expecting anything else this winter other than mild temperatures.
What would be cool is to have winter storm like the 2007 mixed with heavy snows followed up with a ice storm bwhwhhahaha!
With a forcast that far out...Nah...not going to get excited about snow. I gave up on winter a long time ago....I'm ready for a nice warm spring, and a normal warm/hot summer. Maybe next year we can get a few good wind and snow storms? Â
I don't miss the snow much but I could go for a good windstorm. Â
After the last two winters, I can handle a winter without any snow. I won't mind if our spring is a little warmer as well.
@Paddy You don't live in the lowlands, or along a river, do you?
@Bornhere @Paddy South Hill for the first 24 years of my life. Mill Creek for the last 2.5 years.
