The world record for rain over a 24-hour period is 72 inches (6 feet!) on La Reunion Island near the southern Africa Coast during a tropical cyclone. (That spot holds several rain records.) Thats double Seattle's annual rain in one day.
The one hour record is 12 inches set in Holt, Missouri. Over one year, it's 1,042 inches (nearly 87 feet of rain) in Cherrapunji, India. Talk about keeping umbrellas handy!
For Seattle, our one-day rain record is now 5.02 inches set this past October 20. For a year, it's 54.61 inches set in 1950.
