A black bear and two cubs have been visiting our home on Squak Mountain in Issaquah for the last couple months. They have been showing up every 3 to 5 days and rummaging through our garbage. Hopefully the bear and cubs that were caught near Newcastle a couple days ago were the same bears. If so, it shows they have quite a range in their roaming activities searching for food.
One night, the noise of the garbage can being knocked over woke me up and I stepped out onto our deck to try to scare them off. I was yelling and stomping and clapping my hands . . . they just looked up at me and kept on rummaging. I was only 10 feet from them. That worried me that they were not at all nervous around humans. I went inside, caught out my camera and started snapping away. Even the flash didn't bother them. Hopefully the steps the Dept of Fish and Wildlife took in handling the bears will help the bears be more wary of living near humans. I got 3 pretty good pictures of the cubs, I could see the mother bear off in the dark, but none of the pictures attempted in her direction came out.

Wildlife and humans can coexist peacfully. But when living in the suburbs, we must remember that the bears were there first. It is us, not them, that should be ware of where we tread.
