Bad Haole Ju Ju: Tsunami 3.11.11

My husband and I were vacation in Kailua-Kona on The Big Island of Hawaii. We heard about the Japanese earthquake the evening of March 11th. Almost immediately, local TV was broadcasting tsunami warnings. We had a three hour window to prepare. By 1 a.m. we were camping out at the Walmart parking lot, along with a couple hundred other locals/tourists. Walmart is located out of the Tsunami Evacuation Zone. We spent the night in our "mustang motel" rental car. Very little sleep that night! By dawn, helicopters were flying overhead surveying damage along Ali'i Drive (the main drag in town). We could only guess what happened via Oahu radio. Finally, we were allowed back in to our Kona Reef condo about 11 a.m. We were shocked to see the damage that had taken place. Lava boulders tossed about like cottonballs, plants and trees ripped from their roots ending up in living rooms, sliding glass doors shattered, a refrigerator overturned, sand where there was grass. Due to water damage, we moved to another complex later that day. It will be a vacation to remember. Oh ya ... I need to mention this is our second trip to The Big Island. The first trip, 13 months ago (Feb. 27, 2010), another tsunami hit The Big Island. I woke up to sirens the morning of my birthday! My husband says I have "bad haole ju-ju"! lol
