Generators on fire egines save $ in fuel

Fleet Manager Brett Annear explains the use of large generators installed on the top of fire engines. These generators, which are part of Ecology's idle reduction program, enable firefighters to shut off the engine while on scene of a medical emergency. Power for the emergency lights run off the generator. Officials estimate the savings in fuel costs by not needing to run the diesel engine, will be more than $16,000 a year (2-3 gallons an hour, as opposed to .3 gallons an hour).
