Round the County is one of the most popular sailboat races on the West Coast. The race, which circles the San Juan Islands in Washington State, is sponsored by the Orcas Island Yacht Club and the Friday Harbor Sailing Club. This year, the race took place on Nov 12 and 13 and registration was closed when 77 sailboats were entered. Some of the most incredible racing sailboats ever made participate in the race. They have carbon fiber masts, modern designs, Kevlar and Mylar sails and professional crews. But, this year, a 104 year old Schooner, which spent many years hauling timber, not only won her division - but was overall winner of the race! I was the Patos Race Committee Chairman for mid-race timing on Patos Island on Saturday, Nov 12th. The video and photograph of Martha passing Patos Island were both taken by me. This is an incredible event - and one that you won't see very often. It is truly a great human interest story. I am currently Vice Commodore of the Orcas Island Yacht Club and this Thursday, the 17th, will be sworn in as Commodore of the yacht club.
