This setting moon on 2/22/12 was the slenderest that I've ever seen. It turns out that this moon is 28 hours past the new moon. Apparently the earliest that you can see an illuminated early phase moon is 20 hours after the new moon and only under ideal conditions. I thought that it looked pretty cool.

Complex answer. Moon orbits earth every 29.5 days. That causes the moon to set 30-60minutes later each night. New moons appear in the west just after sunset (sun is behind moon). Full moons appear in the east(sun is on opposite side of earth).

It looks as if the moon is setting at 7:30pm tonight. Why would I see the moon in the west at 7:10 -7:30pm? I thought that it would be more in the East at this time of the evening. Please explain
