We have lived here 2 years and still not had a housewarming party because our kitchen sucks!

Our 'new' house (we have been here 2 years now), has a kitchen with a weird 5 foot wide wall blocking the kitchen from the living and dining rooms. We would love to have people over and entertain, but this blocked off layout really doesn't make our house very party-friendly. We really want to rip down the wall, make that area into an L-shaped island area for more counter space (with cupboards underneath to hide our THREE garbage cans--one for recycling, one for yard waste, and one for garbage. Seriously--how do all the other houses in Seattle do this. Where do you hide your garbage cans?? Because mine look pretty stupid sitting out in the open in my kitchen. But I digress......). We also want to replace our linoleum flooring with tile or laminate/wood, getting rid of the LOUD creak we hear wheneve we walk in front of our stove; replace the orangish wood cabinets to match the wood floors in the rest of the house.
