Hummingbirds of the San Poil

Hummingbirds, more than one can count. A month ago they were eating 5 lbs of sugar a day. In three seasons it's gone from 1/2 to 1 lb a day to the current, which is probably around 6 lbs a day. For the most part it's Calliope, but have a few Rufus, and Black Chin. Over the past week or so there has been a transition from adult male, and female calliope, to a few female adult Calliope, a few Black Chin adults and a small army of Newbies, with no sign of the adult male Calliope. I have no idea what the numbers are, just one important fact: About 6 lbs of sugar a day, using 16 feeders. Each year the numbers have more than doubled, so it's getting a bit spooky thinking about what the numbers will be like next Spring. I've lost count of the total, doesn't matter once you've passed 5 lbs a day, but I'm fairly certain I've gone through over 300 lbs of sugar since mid April. Fortunately a friend helped out with a couple of 25 lb bags. It's hard to describe what it's like. What it's like to have over a hundred hummers flying around inside the house ( It actually happened last year ), to walk outside and see them at any time between dawn and dark, or to stand by the feeders and feel a hundred hummers buzzing around me. Based on calorie consumption there are hundreds, but I have no way of knowing how many actually visit here. There's something about this place, this mountain. I have video of the inside the house incident but quality was pretty poor so I pulled it. The rest aren't a lot better, but hopefully will get something HD capable before they leave this season.
