F3 Tornado in Kent, WA 12/12/1969

Someone my dad worked with at Boeing snapped this photo of an F3 tornado touching down in Kent on Dec 12, 1969. This photo is extremely rare!

In class at Mt. Rainier HS. Power went out just before the end of the school day. Rumor went around it had been knocked out by a tornado, which nobody believed--until we saw the damage up at the Kent-Des Moines/Pacific Highway intersection!

In Dec '69 my Brother came home to Stanwood from his tour in Vietnam and I remember how excited I was seeing a photo of this tornado emblazoned across the front page of the Everett Herald.

I remember that one...I was outside in Federal Way. (Clueless, of course). I was 10 years old. The sky turned a sickly purple-green and there was hail.

I saw this tornado in the Kent valley from I-5 driving home from work at Boeing.
