Funding Reductions Affect Stewardship

Funding Reductions Affect Stewardship Projects on Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest

Federal government-wide reductions are going to affect the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest this year, cutting Resource Advisory Committee stewardship funding 47 percent, from $396, 482 to $211,040. The committees will fund seven improvement projects instead of the 18 they had previously approved. “The purpose of RAC funding is to improve the health of watersheds and ecosystems, protect communities and support local economies,” said Jennifer Eberlien, forest supervisor. Projects usually consist of repairing roads and trails, restoring salmon habitat and removing noxious weeds.

RAC’s receive funding through Title II of the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act (Public Law 110-343), which provides payments to counties as compensation for the impact of reduced tax revenue from large federal land acreages within their boundaries. Three Resource Advisory Committees representing Whatcom and Skagit County, Snohomish County, and King and Pierce Counties reviewed project proposals and recommended funding to the forest supervisor.
