Piebald Blacktailed Deer neat Mt Si

Unusual coloring

I noticed this handsome yearling Columbia Blacktail buck walking through the forest near the Mt Si trail head near North Bend. His distinct coloring called for this picture and he was kind enough to oblige. This unusual coloring often is called "Piebalding" and comes from a condition that reduces pigmentation. It is different than albinism. Western Washington is one place known to carry this abnormal coloring gene in blacktails.
