Tan & Anorexic - Party of 3! :*(

I thought this would be the appropriate place to inform others of an incident that happened in Ballard last night. (Because ladies room is all about standing up for other women)! So here it goes….

A few girlfriends and I decided to head to the Matador for dinner last night around 7:30 in Ballard. There was quite the wait for a random Tuesday evening, but we decided to stick it out and put our names on the list. As we were waiting, the hostess kept passing us with this long list as others entered the door. After 20 or so minutes, I decided to glance at the list as she was walking by to see how many people were in front of us. As I glanced, I noticed she had also written a description of people next to their name to find them when their name and table was ready. I saw my name and next to it… it said “Tan / Anorexic”. At first I was thinking, there’s no way she would write that and I just thought I was being self conscious. I pulled my friend Lindsey aside and let her know what I saw and she was determined to confront her. So she walked up to the hostess and asked her if she could see the list and she immediately took the note pad and said, “what do you need”? Lindsey then said, I just need to see the list and as she looked over her shoulder, it definitely said “Tan & Anorexic!” She asked to speak to the manager and the girl walked off. She followed her and said, “I need to speak to a manager now!” The manager walked over and asked what the problem was. Lindsey proceeded to say that his employee made a quick and horrible judgment about a customer. While this was going on, the hostess crossed it off the list and was really embarrassed! The manager asked in complete shock, “is there anything we can do?” Lindsey said, “No, we’re leaving and we’re never coming back!” She said, “You don’t even know my friend and she isn’t anorexic, and if she were this would send her into a deep depression and make things much worse for her!”

This has nothing to do with the restaurant itself, but more about educating people about making quick judgments and discriminating against your own gender or the opposite gender for that matter. Anorexia is a very serious illness and although I have never been a victim, I just happen to be skinny…I get accused of it all the time and I have been dealing with this my whole life! I can’t tell you how many instances that I have been so humiliated after hearing someone make a comment about my weight or calling me anorexic ect….

I was mortified and so upset when I left the restaurant last night and will never go back!

Was her plan to say “Tan & Anorexic – party of 3?!!!

Now I have recently found out that not only is the Matador NOT taking this matter seriously, but they are joking about it and calling the girl Anorexic as a joke.

i'm an anorexic guy and I would have been offended. you don't realize how hard it is to be anorexic. It's not something we can just get over. Plus it's very demeaning and RUDE!. She should be fired and think again about working with the public.

Anonymous says ... on Thursday, Sep 18 at 9:37 AM

really it was a mean thing to write but unless you really are anorexic get over it why let some waitresses opionin bother you

Anonymous says ... on Wednesday, Sep 3 at 5:17 PM

Did you used to work at Starbucks in Newcastle? Did you write your name on my cup once? I didn't notice. Someone told me later after I threw it away in front of you and I felt soooo baaaadddd. : )

Goo says ... on Wednesday, Sep 3 at 1:47 PM

Give me a call, we'll check you out and see if your tan.

WHY HAS SOCIETY CHANGED SO MUCH THAT PEOPLE ARE STICKING UP FOR DISCRIMINATION AND DEROGATORY WORDS AND ACTIONS? THE HOSTESS WAS WRONG!

I USED TO WORK IN THE RESTAURAUNT INDUSTRY.... says ... on Wednesday, Sep 3 at 7:40 AM

THIS WAS A GREAT STORY TO WRITE.FOR EVERYONE THAT'S POSTED ON HERE AGAINST THIS STORY: YOU ARE SEXIST, RACIST, AND APPARENTLY HAVE NO APATHY FOR HUMAN KIND. THE SERVER'S ACTIONS WERE COMPLETELY INAPPROPRIATE, AND SHE SHOULD HAVE A STERN TALKING TO.

Charlie says ... on Wednesday, Sep 3 at 4:40 AM

Why would you go to a place that has bad service, and food that's well as good as taco bell?

e from AB says ... on Wednesday, Sep 3 at 1:02 AM

so if i went in there by myself, it makes me wonder if they would put "warning! fat chick coming in! table for eight!" next to my name.... freaking sad. im sorr this happened to you hun. i hate that resturant....

Dan says ... on Tuesday, Sep 2 at 9:37 PM

You have got to be kidding! this is the reason the media has such a reputation. Yes your feelings may be hurt, but do you really have the right to call out the restaurant for one persons marginal, yes marginal judgement.

anon. says ... on Tuesday, Sep 2 at 9:06 PM

I would have asked for a free meal. The hostess is inappropriate and, unfortunately, her actions do reflect upon how business is run at that restaurant.

WishIHadThatProblem says ... on Tuesday, Sep 2 at 8:36 PM

Whining online on a news website and when that didn't garner the attention wanted, had to drag it onto the airwaves. My sympathy weighs in more and more with the poor hostess! Seems to me she is harrassing this hostess by doing this.

Anonymous says ... on Tuesday, Sep 2 at 2:45 PM

i also heard this story on 92.5 fm the other morning. I think this person also e-mailed this story there too. I too would be upset. Why was using the word "anorexic' to describe her necessary. I dont think so.

Covington, WA says ... on Tuesday, Sep 2 at 8:48 AM

People have made comments that i need to eat or ask if I'm on drugs. People are just jealous. If you are over weight they're going to call you fat, and if you are thin they treat you like you're sick. DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY that's all that matters

fired? says ... on Monday, Sep 1 at 10:56 PM

Tan Rage....did the person get fired? I don't think a first offense should warrant that. Certainly a warning about being more careful about her reminders. I'd be really curious to know if the hostess really got fired.

Tan Rage says ... on Monday, Sep 1 at 3:11 PM

Thanks for getting someone fired!

Customer Service says ... on Sunday, Aug 31 at 9:28 PM

I pity the hostess. She has every right to use whatever means are necessary for her to do her job. There is nothing that whiny customers, or ex-customers, can really do about it, so whining will NOT help.

your conscience says ... on Saturday, Aug 30 at 9:56 AM

The Matador is adopting a new policy where racial slurs will now be used to describe people waiting for a table. And rather than writing them on a small notepad, they will be broadcast over a loud speaker for all to hear.

mike says ... on Friday, Aug 29 at 9:30 PM

dave, It is time for you to re evaluate everything about your life; the clothes you wear, the books you read, and the people you talk to. you should probably quit your job. if your into a religion find a new one. what your doing now isn't working

TheBulle says ... on Friday, Aug 29 at 8:33 PM

I dunno. She definitely doesn't look anorexic (just a healthy middle aged woman who has had several children) and although she is a golden brown, its not tan as much as it is spray on. Way to stand up for yourself Sprayed and Matronly!

Butterfly says ... on Friday, Aug 29 at 5:54 PM

Wow! I am in awe of the outrage on both sides. Anyone that has been ridiculed in their lives can relate to the hurt caused by peoples' words, both written and spoken. At the same time, can any of us say we haven't done the same thing?

tall bald guy party of 2 says ... on Friday, Aug 29 at 5:08 PM

I'm so offended. I'm not bald, it's shaved! ..but tall bald guy named Dave would hopefully prevent Dave with the golden locks from getting my table. The restaurant should adapt and find a different method and the writer reduce her coffee consumption

whocares says ... on Friday, Aug 29 at 3:30 PM

Of all the issues going on in our state and nation, maybe you could direct your energy into something worthwhile. Looks like someone is looking for attention. I'll make sure to eat at Matador and enjoy every second of it.

Seattle-ite says ... on Friday, Aug 29 at 2:26 PM

I am wondering how old you are. The hostess was probably young and wanted to make sure she didn't make any mistakes in her line up. I am sure her notes would not have been posted on the wall after her shift. Maybe you should see a psychologist.

Riley says ... on Friday, Aug 29 at 10:01 AM

Matador is a great restaurant. They won't be hurting. Similar things are noted on files at salons, hospitals, police stations. People called me anorexic in high school all the time. I don't know if I would leave a restaurant for it.

Jeff says ... on Thursday, Aug 28 at 10:20 PM

She wrote the description as a way for her to remember you, she wasn't announcing it to other guests, or calling you anorexic to your face. Huge overreaction. I will continue eating at the Matador, as I have had great experiences there!

Ann says ... on Thursday, Aug 28 at 6:15 PM

That is definetly an over reaction. Let it go. You're so stuck on yourself you can't see that it's not the big deal you're making it out to be. Lighten up. I agree with others, get a life!

ME says ... on Thursday, Aug 28 at 1:32 PM

Dude, she did write it down where others could see it. That is how this thing started! I would have done the same thing! People need to be confronted when being rude/mean because it is wrong and hurtful! Their parents obviously didn't teach them that

FJL says ... on Wednesday, Aug 27 at 2:50 PM

I would be more concerned about the "tan" reference. Skin cancer is very dangerous!!

Concerned says ... on Wednesday, Aug 27 at 10:29 AM

Have to agree with JS on this one, get over it. I'd be shocked if you hadn't labeled someone in your lifetime. Lindsay just needed some attention, so she felt she had to make a scene in order to get some attention. Too bad that's what it takes.

AC says ... on Wednesday, Aug 27 at 12:19 AM

Wow , people take offence at anything . I would like to be tan and anorexic but I'm Pale white and Fat. If I like who I am and people see me alike, what's the problem. Don't blame others for who YOU choose to be. PS. nice smile.

Are you really complaining? says ... on Saturday, Aug 23 at 6:10 AM

Would you be as inspired to speak up about and injustice if you would have seen the next people on the list noted as obese and should never eat? Probably not, be glad you are thin and can even afford to eat at an over priced place like the Matador.

Communicator says ... on Sunday, Aug 17 at 4:57 PM

Hmm this the first time I've heard of a woman feeling humiliated about being thin. Isn't that what we all strive for? Yes the hostess was insensitive and should have used a different method like clothing as someone else suggested. Or write smaller.

free says ... on Sunday, Aug 17 at 1:55 PM

OVER THE TOP dont worry be happy. your reaction indicates you are.

JS says ... on Sunday, Aug 17 at 1:53 PM

GET OVER YOURSELF! IT'S NOT THE END OF THE WORLD. I'm SURE you have NEVER made a comment about someone's appearance or physical build. That's why you're so skinny, you get you feelings hurt over NOTHING and walk out of restaurants.

Pale/chubby says ... on Friday, Aug 15 at 11:48 PM

My description : Pale/Chubby and I would have been offended if I had glanced at the book and saw that. What other judgements do they make? If I brought my developmentally disabled nephew would a "bright" description of that be allowed? Not ok then?

hippygirl says ... on Friday, Aug 15 at 11:43 PM

I'm shocked at the lack of empathy. Of course this isn't the greatest tragedy. But as some mentioned, it degrades moral fabric to be careless with words. We aren't robots, but as an employee you choose to represent the company not yourself.

jack johson says ... on Friday, Aug 15 at 1:07 PM

my wife and I had a bad experience w/ a hostest at the same place. At some point it does speak to management and the restaurant itself.

Life Experience cont. says ... on Friday, Aug 15 at 12:58 PM

Many people use words in a general way. So, 'anorexic' might be a term used for anyone who is very thin, no offense meant to the person. Lack of wisdom is her issue, over sensitivity is yours. People can't freak each time they feel offended. Grow up.

Buck says ... on Friday, Aug 15 at 12:56 PM

She was wrong. She should have written "Tan/Self-Righteous". Look. If this is the great crisis in your life that you need to share with others, then you have a pretty darn good life. Roll with it and quit whining.

MissBeth says ... on Friday, Aug 15 at 12:56 PM

This was VERY insensitive of the hostess! Those who think this is being over blown need to take some sensetivity training! There are PLENTY of ways this hostess could have written a description - clothing color woulda worked in my humble opinion!

Life Experience says ... on Friday, Aug 15 at 12:51 PM

Granted, the hostess didn't use the best judgment when using the term she did but I would venture that if you took her aside in an open manner and asked why she wrote that she would likely say it was just a term meaning "thin" to her.

frogaboo says ... on Friday, Aug 15 at 12:05 PM

How many time have you or your friends saw a heavy person and said something out of hear shot??? You know what they say about carma!!!

valet says ... on Friday, Aug 15 at 12:04 PM

I write very descriptive/judging comments on my valet tickets so i can have their cars waiting for them before they even make it through the front doors. It helps me provide outstanding service. But if they saw what i wrote they'd be mad. a tradeoff

Auburn, Wa says.... says ... on Friday, Aug 15 at 11:47 AM

I cannot believe that's how they keep track of their customers. The right thing to do is call the name with number of guests, that always works!! Seems like management allowed them to do this and that was totally wrong!! No Matador for me!!

dave seattle says ... on Friday, Aug 15 at 9:44 AM

Kim and Calif dude--it's attitudes and practices like this (Matador—and of course if it did indeed occur) that causes the perpetual downward spiraling of the society’s moral fabric and ethical foundation. If this happen to you or the “snow ball effe

Tracy says ... on Friday, Aug 15 at 8:55 AM

this is so stupid. your lucky you are naturally so thin that some people can't even imagine being that thin so they assume you must be anorexic. Big Deal get over it. It sounds like you were being obnoxious about being seated!!!Take on a real Cause!!

Dan, Tacoma says ... on Friday, Aug 15 at 7:05 AM

What??..people are not allowed their opinions anymore? Are we robots with no more thought than how to serve? At least she gave you a compliment on being tan! I think you should go on with your life and stop worrying about the little things, have fun.

Anonymous says ... on Friday, Aug 15 at 6:28 AM

This is a overreaction, the employee deals with 100's of customers and chose this way to remember who is who, AIso I can't believe this kind of thing is on komonews.com! I mean really, this is something you post on citysearch.com reviews. Grow up!!!

max, Vancouver says ... on Friday, Aug 15 at 2:59 AM

I agree that the hostess should have been more mannered but I think this story is an over fuss. It reminded me, again, of elementary school. Let it go--she'll learn her lesson, from now on. :(

Hippygirl says ... on Friday, Aug 15 at 1:36 AM

a patron saw it. The company lost money. You might not think it's a big deal, but to the owner in a struggling economy it is. Word of mouth is good/bad advertisment. It's not the hostess' place to have a personal opinion during her shift.

Kim, Seattle says ... on Thursday, Aug 14 at 10:46 PM

grow up... who cares. I cant believe you actually were so upset by this that you wrote about it...there are bigger problems than this to vent about. I feel sorry for you for being so sensitive about something so petty.

Thunder says ... on Thursday, Aug 14 at 9:38 PM

I find it so difficult to understand, she did nothing that you haven't done .Yet your willing to point your guilty finger and cast unrightious indignation at someone just trieing to slog through another day of serving the rude and ungreatful grow up

Wow. says ... on Thursday, Aug 14 at 8:45 PM

Is your life so dull that this is the only thing you had to write about? Why on earth would you think anyone but you and your friend could possibly care about this? I can't believe your editor allowed you to publish this drivel. Pathetic. Get a life.

Hippygirl says ... on Thursday, Aug 14 at 7:10 PM

I don't believe it's an over-reaction. She is on the job. What if another patron did see it. This "hostess" chooses to label her paying "guest" and seat them according to their looks not first come first served. Keep your filthy thoughts to yourself

Selena says ... on Thursday, Aug 14 at 7:00 PM

I am also thin and have endured many comments through out life of people asking me "Don't you eat" OR " "Maybe you should have a cheese burger" I have tried to gain weight but cant. Throw a harassment charge on them, then you'll see them laugh.

Rhonda, Lacey says ... on Thursday, Aug 14 at 3:34 PM

Im really sorry that people can be so rude and judgmental about how they view others. I guess I would of been called white porky. People need to stop and actually think of how their words and actions effect others feelings.

California Dude says ... on Thursday, Aug 14 at 3:19 PM

Wow, what an incredible over-reaction. It's not like the hostess shared this with other patrons, or wrote it somewhere others could see. Sure, she's a jerk, but attacking the restaurant is overkill.
