Praying Mantis found on the side of my house in Auburn.

Praying Mantis Found In Auburn

I've lived in the Northwest my whole life, but I've never seen a praying mantis in the wild. Today as my son was going down for his nap, my wife noticed a strange looking visitor on the outside of his window. My wife is from Guam and praying mantii are quite common there, so she recognized this little guy right away.

I coaxed him onto a piece of wood so I could take his picture. I think once he realized his picture was being taken he started showing off by crawling around, walking onto my hand, and waving his arms around.

I put him back where I found him and he seems quite content just hanging out. I hope he sticks around, I think he looks really cool.

(2/2) Now we have a very fat one posted on the screen door. She's funny, she doesn't move at all. Not when sliding the door nor when getting close to her. Other times, they are much more animated. I think she will lay eggs soon, hopefully not on door

I'm in my 40's and had never seen a praying mantis in the wild. This summer I've come across them about 6 times in the yard. First one found was white. I believe they are white just after molting. The others (might be the same one) where green. (1/2)

I live in Graham and I have a rope-like egg case on my porch. Research led me to think it might be praying mantis, but I've never seen them in Washington before so I'm skeptical about it. I suppose I'll find out if it's mantises sooner or later!

I'm in Graham, WA...20min S. Of Puyallup. I found a light brown praying mantis hanging out on the side of the house a few days ago! NEVER have seen one in the wild. Didn't even know they were around. He's still there as of this morning. Very cool.

We have seen three this summer at our farm on Harmony Hill, near Mossyrock, Wash. Ours are green in color. We have never seen any here before...wonder how long they will stay, and where they came from. Maybe it was the long hot summer? 10-5-2015

I don't think they would effect the populations of native insects any more than, for example, dragon flies. They are the size of mosquitos when they hatch, and grow for three or four months before they become adults and are able to reproduce offspring

A. says ... on Wednesday, Apr 22 at 9:31 AM

Do you think the Mantises are showing up because they have been imported from other places for pest control? Is it detrimental to native good bugs?

A. says ... on Wednesday, Apr 22 at 9:29 AM

My sister had one in a planter box outside her house about 6 years ago in Eastern Washington and it bit her child.

A. says ... on Wednesday, Apr 22 at 9:28 AM

Jennifer says ... on Monday, Mar 9 at 7:02 PM

I think they might be showing up due to the sales of egg cases online telling people they will decrease the amount of other intrusive insects around their homes if released. I am currently in Kent and look forward to trying to find one!
