I've lived in the Northwest my whole life, but I've never seen a praying mantis in the wild. Today as my son was going down for his nap, my wife noticed a strange looking visitor on the outside of his window. My wife is from Guam and praying mantii are quite common there, so she recognized this little guy right away.

I coaxed him onto a piece of wood so I could take his picture. I think once he realized his picture was being taken he started showing off by crawling around, walking onto my hand, and waving his arms around.

I put him back where I found him and he seems quite content just hanging out. I hope he sticks around, I think he looks really cool.

These come in on our shipments of new boats from Tennessee i believe, we see them frequently around the dealership in the summertime. They are pretty cool, I sent one with my daughter for show and tell last month so the other kids could see one.

I think they might be showing up due to the sales of egg cases online telling people they will decrease the amount of other intrusive insects around their homes if released. I am currently in Kent and look forward to trying to find one!

Do you think the Mantises are showing up because they have been imported from other places for pest control? Is it detrimental to native good bugs?

I don't think they would effect the populations of native insects any more than, for example, dragon flies. They are the size of mosquitos when they hatch, and grow for three or four months before they become adults and are able to reproduce offspring
