For an unknown reason, there are thousands of giant squid washing up in Westport marina. Local fishermen are trying to keep up with the huge wave of squid, but hundreds are dying, washed up in the murky water. Locals say this is a very rare occurance, with one witness saying he has only seen something like this once before in his lifetime in Westport.
We have been unable to contact any officials with knowledge of why this would be happening.

Very interesting. However, those are not "giant squid." That name is reserved for the rarely seen deep-ocean dwelling variety.

This happened in 2004 around Long Beach, too. Same species. Same time of year. I imagine it has more to do with global climate change or over fishing than anything really exotic or exciting.

Ok to eat if you get them live, then remove the steaks, which any local on the pier can help you do. they may be spawning as evidently warm currents sent them this way a few years ago and they could be returning home....i suspect we'll find out soon
