Humming "Let it snow!"

They don't ALL go south for the winter!

As the snow blankets us here in Port Orchard with at least 5 inches (and still falling...) the plight of local hummingbirds looking for food can be quite challenging. Many of them stay the winter here, but on snow days like today, it's awfully hard for them to find food, even if you put feeders out. Case in point, this little hummer came to feed this morning and the nectar was frozen! So we had to melt it down and put out more for them. Tip to bird-friendly folks with hummingbird feeders - bring the feeder in at night, but be sure to put it out at the crack of dawn or they may go hungry. Also, be prepared to rotate new liquid nectar for the stuff outside before it freezes over.

If they try to feed on frozen nectar, their tongues might get stuck on the ice, or they might get a brain freeze (like we get if we eat something cold too fast...) and fall to the ground, as was the case with one last night.
