Hummingbird near heat lamp

Hummingbird Wintering in Woodinville

I noted an Anna's hummingbird flying around the frozen fuchsia blossoms in below freezing weather a couple of days ago (12/16/08) so put out a feeder and a light to keep the feeder from freezing. The feeder was found in just a few hours and now at least one bird has taking to staying close by the feeder most of the day and snacking frequently.

We have one in Poulsbo as well. What has caused them to be up here in December? Did they ever leave in the fall? The light is a great idea, thanks.

Good job with the light! She appreciates your kindess! And thank you -- that could be one of my little trochilidae visitor's from down here!

Anna's stay year round and definately need food to survive. Mine has figured how to trick my motion sensor and now sits on top getting heat from the bulb! I got some terrific photos of them in the show but I have to admit I love the lamp above!

Great job you guys, I use to look foward to winter so I could have a break from the sugar water thing but not for the last few years. Ohh well, Still Love them.

We just moved to Issaquah and a flowering plant I have on the windowsill attracted two. We set up the feeder and they appear to be here to stay. We used to have one or two that hung out with some of the other birds through the winter in Bend OR

I asked an aviary expert about hummers overwintering here in Tacoma,WA, thinking it odd. He said our hummers mostly fly south, but Alaskan hummers come here thinking it's rather mild...mostly. Sugar water doesn't freeze, keep'em out!

Yeap Anna's stay here yr round. I have at least 5 or 6 that come to my feeder all of the time. I watch the temp. Made the mistake of not bring it in on a freezing night & it was frozen solid for 3 days {had to leave it inside to thaw slowly}
