Freezing temperatures in the Pacific Northwest are costing precious Christmas Cash. Finding themselves suddenly without power and water, two women who are long time friends are forced to combine resources to stay in a motel in Everett. One is a 49 year old Union Flagger, layed off due to winter weather. Resources for single women and men are harder to find than for those with children.
"This is the first white Christmas of my life, and it is costing precious Christmas cash. Handmade jewelry and ornament sales this time of year provide the ,year end cash I use to put presents under the tree" says one of the pair who has a son at the Ronald Mcdonald house in Seattle. He is 17 and facing two years of chemo therapy for a rare combination of two forms of bone cancer.
To make matters worse Mom notes that she was hoping to use some of this months income to replace her son's WII system that was recently stolen when they relocated from the Lakewood area to be close to the hospital. It was stolen one hour the young man and his Grandmother moved into the First Hill Apartments onTenth Ave in Seattle. Someone with a key entered the room, made and burned popcorn, and stole the Wii System along with about $600 worth of games and controler equipment. No attempt has been made by the complex to replace it. Phone calls are not being returned, and the snow and the economy have conspired to make it almost impossible for his Mom to replace it. Christmas will have to come in January for this family.
