Having escaped Harvey airfield with my plane on Thursday, just as they were evacuating the airport due to road closures. I had to go back today and take a look at the airfield myself. So with my trusted photographer in the co-pilot seat, who also happens to have an airplane left behind there, I set off to see the damage first hand.
Just before I left Harvey Thursday I was upstairs in the office getting a weather radar update. In the background I could hear the office staff calling everyone to evacuate the airport. It was getting kind of hectic in the office as they were making sure all tenants were contacted and airplanes had all been moved to safer locations on the airfield. Someone looked out the window at a piper parked just outside and asked out loud " ... and who's plane is that? Who would park it there and leave it in flood." I looked up and said "Don't worry that's mine. I'm flying it out here in a couple of minutes."
I had already preflighted, fueled, warmed her up and was ready to go. I just had to worry about the weather and the runup checklist. On takeoff from Harvey the sight of the raging Snohomish river filling the valley was stunning. The flight to Paine took 12 minutes, was slightly bumpy but, uneventful. I was so very relieved to get my plane out of the danger area and tie her down safe and dry.
