Clouds

While camping in California last week I noticed a reflection of color on the creek down below the property, when I looked up I saw this beautiful rainbow cloud. It was a sunny day about 80 degrees and I had never seen anything like it.

This is called a circumhorizontal arc. It occurs at midday, close to the summer solstice at mid-latitudes. It is caused by sunlight passing through rotating ice crystals in the clouds, making rainbow colors. I saw one over Spokane June '06. Will post
