Hello everyone. I wanted to post this story because I found it very odd and interesting at the same time. About a week ago my now 8 year old son was playing outside looking for dirt rocks in a dug up pile of dirt on our street. Instead of finding dirt rocks, he found what appears to be a human knee bone. I told him we would take it to the police station. The first time we went to turn it in, the police station was closed; I wasn't aware that the police station ever closed. Anyway, we took it in to the police station today and they looked at it and kind of laughed about it. They said thank you for bringing it in. I had to ask them if they needed my name or my son's name or a statement or something. So they did take down my name and number and said if any questions come up that someone would contact me. I was baffled by how lightly they took to this bone that a little boy found in a pile of dirt. The pile of dirt was dug up by the city because they are putting in a sidewalk along our street. So the bone was found in the pile that the city dug up, so I wonder what, if anything will become of this bone. Is there an unsolved mystery here? Well that's our story of the "Mystery Bone".

Also if you could give some indication to the size of the bone that would help in identifying the animal.

The bone is the distal end of a femur. Based off of your photo i would say it is from livestock (cow, probably). If you want more images to compare your photo to just search using "distal femur" and a ton of images will pop up.

well this bone (if Human) is the size of I'd say, a large male. And no I didnt take any other photos besides the one with my son holding it in a plastic bag and I didn't want to post my son's picture.

It doesn't look much like a patella to me but it might just be the picture. Do you have any other pictures? Different angles perhaps? How big is the bone? I'm curious as to which bone it is now.

Well where can I look to find a picture that looks like the one I've posted? When I looked on the internet, our picture looks like that of a human knee bone, but not any animal bone. But thank you for your comments. We live in University Place, WA

Fred has no clue what he's talking about. That's not an ulna, it's a very old and warn vertebrae. An ulna is a long thin bone in the forearm (where your arm rotates, that's the radius and ulna). What your son found is an animal vertebrae.

Don't worry, It looks like a medium to large size sheep or pig bone ulna by the looks of it (top of the foreleg). It's cool that your son found it but I wouldn't worry, a lot of places are buit where old farms used to be. Where was it found?
