9-11-2007, I was driving home this morning from work and was pleasantly surprised when I got to the Bethel Round-About in Port Orchard. I saw a young man holding an American flag, as I continued my turn I saw another. I finally noticed they were Boy Scouts holding American Flags all around the Round-About. There even was a Boy Scout in a wheel chair holding Old Glory. I immediately knew why they were there.
I saluted them and continued on my way. Then a thought hit me like a stone, where was the press? Seems to me the press is always there when there are people spouting anti-American slogans, or blocking workers helping maintain our freedom and security. Indeed, where was the press?
I thought of those young men holding the symbol so many have sacrificed so much to maintain it waving. I turned my car around and stopped to take photos of those young men standing there in the cold morning proudly holding Old Glory high. Not to protest the protestors, not to say bring the soldiers home, but to render honor to those who gave so much those short six years ago and continually do so.
I saw the pride in the face of the parents standing, watching their young men out there holding those flags and I had to hold back tears. What a moment. The press was not there but I was.
I hope they see this letter so they can know the guy in the blue shirt is proud to have shared that brief moment on such a solemn day. Thank you Boy Scout Troop, may you continue to hold the Flag high and Proud.
