The 28th annual Celebrate Swedish gala was held on April 27 at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel. The event generated $700,000 for charity care at Swedish and $2.6 million for the new Lytle Center for Pregnancy & Newborns, which opens this summer.

Honorary Chairs
Chuck and Karen Lytle
Dr. Charles and Lisa Simonyi

Committee Chairs
Sarah Everitt
Jessica Jensen Hughes
Tracy Morris

Proceeds from the 2013 Celebrate Swedish Gala supported Swedish’s charity care program which offers free or discounted hospital services for those who cannot afford care, many of whom are underinsured or have no insurance at all. In 2012, Swedish provided more than $35 million in direct charity care alone.

In addition to supporting charity care, the 2013 Fund-A-Need project for Celebrate Swedish 2013 was the new Lytle Center for Pregnancy & Newborns, a unique community resource soon to be located at Swedish/ First Hill. This 5,000 square-foot space will provide an array of care and support services that enable Swedish to provide comprehensive care to mothers and their newborns that continues through the first days and months of a new baby's life.

An impressive turn out for this years scholarship fundraising event at the UPS Field House Flea Market. Today people were lined up at both entrances on this brisk morning to get a chance to see what treasures they could find. They crowded in to view and purchase from over 60 booths. This years event has expanded from just antiques and collectables to include local small businesses. There were many collectables from old postcards to antique glassware, furniture, toys and vintage clothing and jewelry. A number of local businesses like Blue Beard coffee of Tacoma, Heavenly Honey Farms located in the Puyallup valley, Mountain Muesli cereal of Tacoma and Marcus Harper glassworks glass garden art to name a few. The UPS Womans League had a wonderful booth of donated glassware as well as furniture. Hand made soaps from the Soap Cabin in Milton and Basic Goods of Tacoma also had great selections of what they have available in their stores. It was a pleasure to wander through a flea market that had the old time feel of a true flea market, reflecting the interests of the community we live in. A big Thank you to Lynn and Amy for all their hard work in organizing this event, a great turnout, we hope to see them next year to continue bringing together the community and small business for the enjoyment of collectors and those of us who have been coming to this event for the last 45 years.

I am Spokesperson for a Magazine called Internationally Fly Nails,Inc; which is a division of Ambi'ance Magazine,CEO Jonathan Fields. There is so much negative talk about women who where extreme nails; and I want to set things straight. Like others on Fly Nails; I can do whatever I want using them. Without them I would not be able to function.I have had my nails since the late 1980's; and it has been quite a ride; with comments like " how do you wipe your_____ with that"? And worse. We are not freaks. A lady years ago approached me and said "If you are going to wear that you have to know who you are". I didn't understand what she meant then. Now I know that what she meant was that; we who dare to be different have to be prepared for what our uniqueness will bring; some positive but mostly negative comments..But because we choose to be who we are; does not make you better than anybody. It really doesn't hurt or take anything away from no one to be nice...We women love what we represent; and not only freedom to be who who we want; but to exist in this world expressing ourselves not needing anyone's approval!!!!!!.... Internationally Fly Nails Spokesperson -

This is my 4yo son Eric at his dance recital. He almost fell off the stage doing his moves. He stole the show, even with his little oops. Luckily, the other dancers didn't mind too much.

Eric's grandpa wanted to make sure I sent it in. He is very proud. - Thank you!

Recreation fees waived on Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest

The U.S. Forest Service is giving visitors to the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest a Veteran’s Day present this weekend: free fun. Fees will be waived at more than 74 day-use sites on the forest Nov. 10-12.

The fee waivers are offered in cooperation with other federal agencies under the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act. “This is our way of saying thanks to the brave men and women – past and present – who put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe at home,” said U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell.
