Hi I have a friend Tina Laguna who runs an horse and donkey rescue operation from her small farm in Snoqualmie. Currently she had two horses one's name is Rose and the other one is Barberella and a donkey name Elmer that she is nursing all back to health. She does this out of the kindness of her heart and with very little help from others. Tina is much need as is a lot of other rescuers out there for donation to help with the care and the basic needs of the animals that she so kindly took in when others could or would not. The recognition would go far in helping Tina with the recovery of these poor lost animals who has nothing but love to give to someone who is lucky and kind enough themselves to care for them once Tina gets them in adoptable shape.

Pictures and info can be found on her Facebook page here...

Everyone has a dream. For many of us our dream is simply to have a safe place to call home, to be loved and to be safe.

I am nominating Dream Bigger because I too was one of these statistics. And I know these aren't just numbers, but each number here has a face, a heart and a dream. Each person has the desire for a hope and a future, but many of us have no idea where to start. Because of the help my family received during our struggle to be free of Domestic Violence, I am no longer a product of Child Abuse, but I am now a healthy, flourishing woman with a bright future.

According to the Clark County Prosecuting Attorney: There are 1,500 shelters for battered women in the United States. There are 3,800 animal shelters. (Schneider, 1990).

Three to four million women in the United States are beaten in their homes each year by their husbands, ex-husbands, or male lovers. ("Women and Violence," Hearings before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, August 29 and December 11, 1990, Senate Hearing 101-939, pt. 1, p. 12.)

One woman is beaten by her husband or partner every 15 seconds in the United States. (Uniform Crime Reports, Federal Bureau of Investigation, 1991).

It doesn't have to be this way. The good news is that there are organizations like Dream Bigger that are stepping up to fill this need.

Specifically Dream Bigger does this by being committed to preventing violence against women & children through advocacy, financial, educational & career coaching, connection to current community services through resourcing & networking, the creation & development of new innovative services and some very serious community awareness!

One of the practical ways they do this is with their Safe Home Project. This project helps women who are about to face foreclosure fill the financial gap so that they may remain in their homes. This is essential as 75% of our homeless are women and children escaping domestic violence.

Everyone has a dream in their heart and Dream Bigger exists to see those dreams come to fruition.

"Dream Bigger helped me find resources in my community that I didn't know existed, helped me see I wasn't alone, provided a support network that developed into lifetime friendships & paid for me to attend advocacy trainings so I can be a support to other women myself. My future is filled with much more hope now". -A Thankful Mom With Young Kids. www.DreamBigger.info

Thank you for your vote.
It matters.

When Debbi Fisher of Yelm, Washington lost her husband, Colonel Randall Fisher, in a car accident, she turned her grief into giving back to the community. Colonel Fisher's horse, Rootbeer, needed a job, and when Debbi realized that there were wounded service members at Joint-Base Lewis-McChord who could benefit from equine therapy, she tapped into her own savings and established a program for them. Debbi, now remarried, runs Rainier Therapeutic Riding's Horses Healing Heroes program with her second husband, Bob Woelk. They use their own horses, time, and resources, along with a showing of volunteers, to teach horsemanship and riding skills to injured and wounded military personnel. The soldiers and airmen may have physical or psychological injuries or both. Regardless, they learn new skills, build their confidence, and gain their strength through a unique program that taps into powerful assets: their own abilities and will. While Debbi and Bob only perceive themselves as facilitators, they are regarded as angels to the many service members that they have helped. I should know, as I was one of those service members. I now volunteer with the program too and admire the many miracles I see taking place through this wonderful charity. Debbi and Bob have opened up their hearts and home to the community, both soldiers and civilians, to bring them together and make it all happen.

Mary Sweeney is one of the most hard working, and most helpful people I know. She volunteers through The Centralia FFA almost everyday, and is proudly her chapters Sentinal, and going for President next year. Also every friday along with going to help her grandfather take care of her handicapped grandmother, she wakes up at six to go help people in need at The Greater Chehalis Food Bank in Chehalis, Washington. She loves to help the community in anyway she can. For example, at least once a week she goes around town Centralia, Washington and cleans up garbage off the streets, or she'll help students that need help in school but do not have enough money to hire a tutor. Also, last year The Lewis County Senior Center almost got shutdown because they didn't have money to keep the place running. When she see's a need, she fills it.She spent almost a month baking a cooking, leading up to a giant bake sale she held to earn money for the center. When the bake sale was over she had donated over 200 dollars to the center to help keep it running. The center was so thankful they did a page long ad in there paper thanking her. She has done so much more for the Lewis County Community it would be almost impossible to write an essay on it. She deserves any scholarships she can get to follow her dreams to be a Veterinarian and hopefully own an animal shelter in the future. She is not just a hardworking and helpful young lady either, she is also very smart. In 2008 she won the highest Presidential Award for Educational Excellence. She has also be given multiple foreign exchange student offers but had to turn them down because of her parents low income. She is now in High School with a 3.85 GPA and is applying for Scholarships to go to Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. Thank you for your time reading this, and if anything please help her by giving her the chance at the Brotherton Community Champions Scholarships.

I met Julie a year ago through a mutual friend, since I've known Julie she's always been so helpful and caring. She put others need before her own. I would like to say she's a workaholic and compassionate in what she does. She's helped out so many people and never expects anything back in return. To top that off she's an amazing mother of three!!! Supermom she is! She's currently helping me with a case and I am forever appreciative of that. Julie has a kind heart and I know she wants to expand her help to others who needs it, I know with this money she can do so.

Julie Delgado, Mother of triplets is the Founder of Disability Advocates for Cystic Fibrosis. This was a foundation she started when she was married to Marc Raysbrook who has CF. Her goal is to help as many people as she could who are having problems with their disability claims. She helps them free of charge sometimes spending money out of her own pocket while fighting to get them money that they deserve. She has helped many people over the 7 years I have known her. She is very deserving of this money.

For my sons 8th birthday he decided he did not want birthday presents....he wanted money to buy bullet proof vests for our local K-9 officers. The 3 dogs on our local force were not protected while they worked to protect us. He worked really hard to raise money doing yard sales, bakes sales, and also did several news broadcasts to collect $4,200.69. He not only bought vests for our 3 dogs but 1 other for a local department and a used vest for the same department. The left over money went to buy emergency heat detection equipment for one of the police cars. He worked really hard to help the police dogs and is already making plans on the ways that he will be able to help the someone else. He has even done a food drive for one of his friends families whose house burnt down in a fire. I am very prod of him and can't wait to help him with his next big idea of changing bad news into good news. With this grant the sky would be the limit. Thanks!!!

I would like to nominate a young man who worked this summer to raise money for a young boy he did not know. Porter was a patient at Children's Hospital going thru chemo and many surgeries. When Carson (the young man) heard about Porter he asked if he could set up a KoolAid stand to raise money for Porter's family. The stand was set up in Carson's driveway and the customers started coming. Once people found out that Carson was trying to help a family in need they donated what they could. One gentleman, on a motorcycle, paid for his KoolAid with a $100 bill and told Carson to put the change in the donation jar for Porter. On a day when I was at his house another gentleman pulled into the driveway and handed Carson $20's for Porter. In two weeks Carson had raised over $500 for Porter and family.

Once Porter was healthy enough to have visitors Carson went to Children's and met Porter and his Mom and Dad. He presented them with the money that had been in the jar. He wanted them to have the exact money that he had earned for them (all the pennies, 1's, 5's etc.).

Carson Skahan was six when he did his KoolAid stand for Porter. Now at the age of 7, Carson is at it again. This time he is raising money for "Relay for Life". He is selling baked goods, home made candy and handmade ornaments. Carson has enjoyed doing the fund raising to help others and wants to keep doing it. He can hardly wait for summer to come so he can start raising money for another cause or maybe another family.

Carson lives in Stanwood with his parents and younger brother and sister. He attends Cederhome Elemetary where he is in second grade and participates in the choir.
